Back in the day, when the utility company needed to check our water, gas, or electric usage, an actual person “the meter reader” would walk over to the meter and note the reading. Nowadays, the standard meter is being replaced with a smart meter, but these meters can cause health issues for many people. Chances are you have one already! Read on to find out if you need a cover for your smart meter to block the EMF and discover our top cover picks.
Basically the smart meter sends our usage information wirelessly to “the meter reader” as they drive by. While convenient for the utility company, it’s problematic for any of us working to protect our families from the dangers of EMF radiation. Here’s what you need to know about smart meter EMF radiation and how to protect yourself by using a cover.
What is a smart meter EMF cover?
It’s a metal mesh (often called a faraday cage) that goes around your utility meter and weakens the wireless signal being sent out. Here’s what a smart meter looks like before and after the EMF cover is installed:

Installation instructions
- Difficulty: EASY
- Duration: 3-5 Minutes
- Tools Required: Phillips screwdriver & small adjustable crescent wrench
- Measure meter before buying. California and some other areas have smart meters larger than the standard size.
Standard size

- 7 inches in diameter
- 4.5 inches in height
- 3 inch cutout for the meter lock
Top Smart Meter EMF Covers
If you already have a smart meter and want to reduce the EMF radiation with a cover, here are the two best options I’ve found so far (both of which have solid reviews and proven track records):
Smart Meter Guard by Safety First Shields

Smart Meter Guard’s EMF Cover (made in the USA) attaches over your smart meter, and it is made from high-quality stainless steel that won’t rust or break over time. This EMF Cover is a bit of an investment, but it is also a product that is built to withstand harsh weather conditions. If you live in an area that experiences cold and snowy winters, this is a great cover to consider.
SmartMeterCover by Asia Metal Inc

SmartMeterCover’s is a bit more economical for anyone looking for an EMF cover. Similar in style and design to Smart Meter Guard’s cover, but not quite as durable. So if you’re on a budget or live in a calmer climate, this may be a great option to consider.
What to know about smart meters & EMF exposure
Smart meters actually allow the utility company to do even more than just track usage, including:
- Install software
- Turn off your electricity
… all without ever having to physically go to your home.
Unfortunately, this means our home is constantly bombarded with RF (radio frequency) signals… also known as EMF (electromagnetic frequency). RF signals in high enough volume are a known carcinogen. But even in low levels some people are sensitive, so precautions should be taken at any level of exposure. More research is needed to determine the long-term effects of low-level EMF exposure, but the American Cancer Society acknowledges that there is a possible cancer risk from the use of smart meters.

Smart meters and EMF radiation poisoning
Even though they are outside, smart meters still add to our overall level of EMF radiation inside our home. This exposure really compounds when considering the many other modern conveniences that give off EMF radiation!
Effects on those with EMF radiation sensitivity
For those with electromagnetic sensitivity or in people overloaded with EMF, they often experience:
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Dysesthesia – An itchy (often painful) sensations
- Memory changes
- Headache/Nausea
- Increased irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
Depending on an individual’s sensitivity and exposer levels, the symptoms and severity can vary widely. A good test is to go to an area where EMF levels are low (out in the country or into the wilderness) and notice any relief you feel. People with EMF sensitivity often notice immediate relief when they enter an area with lower EMF levels.
Stories like this are not uncommon:
We’ve had this installed for a little over a year. My daughter was experiencing painful headaches and just an overall tension in her room completely unexplained. She researched the smart meter outside her room and came across this. We bought it immediately, installed it right away. All headaches gone, tension gone, baby sleeps better. EMF causes headaches, triggers migraines and instills tension in the air. All this is gone. The price is worth it. ~ Susan USA
Besides the discomfort, another risk of long-term EMF exposure from smart meters is cancer. EMF radiation has been linked to leukemia, glioma, and other serious and often fatal forms of cancer. EMF stimulates tumor growth in susceptible individuals, as well. EMF is a slow and silent killer lurking everywhere we go, but rarely diagnosed as the root cause! Fortunately, there is much we can do to minimize our risk… Especially in our homes.
Steps to block EMF from smart meters
It can be difficult to minimize our exposure to smart meters because much is out of our control. We really don’t have much say in what kind of meter the utility company uses. They are usually upgraded over time on a city-wide basis, so odds are if you have one, your entire community does too.
Most cities won’t allow you to buy and install your own meter either, particularly if the city is already using smart meter technology. However, some utility companies will allow you to switch to a standard meter, but it likely comes with an installation and monthly cost. It’s more work for their employees to take manual reading, so they pass the buck onto you.
If you live somewhere that requires using smart meters, here’s what you can do to lower the overall level of EMF radiation and create an EMF safe haven in your home:
- Invest in a smart meter EMF cover (highly recommended).
- Go wired as much as possible.
- Us an EMF blocking cell phone case and turn your cell phone off (or put in airplane mode) when not in use.
- Use a wifi router guard and plug it into an electrical timer that automatically turns it off during times you don’t need it.
- Have a designated place for your phones away from the family and NEVER sleep next to your phone.
- Disable Bluetooth on all your devices.
- Disable wireless printing.
- Stand far away from the microwave when it’s in use.
Investing in a high-quality EMF detector is also a good idea, so you can pinpoint which devices are producing high levels of EMF.
How to Find Out If you have a smart meter or not
The easiest way to find out if you have a smart meter or not is to contact your local utility company and ask, “Does my home use a smart meter?”
If they reply, “Yes” then ask:
“How is the transmission sent, through wire or through space (wireless)?”
If they reply, “Through wire” then you’re safe, but it’s rarely the case.
If they reply, “Through space/wireless” ask them:
“How frequently is that transmission signal sent?”
If it’s every 90 seconds or less then it is a big problem.
If it’s every 30 days or more then you probably don’t need to worry much about it, unless you are experiencing chronic symptoms of EMF radiation poisoning.
The future of smart meters
Smart meters are growing in popularity, but the added convenience comes at the cost of our health, so it’s important to know how to protect your family and home. Call your utility company to find out, invest in a smart meter cover and lower your home’s overall EMF radiation levels to reduce your risk of EMF-related sickness. Our health is priceless, so take the time to shield your home and family!
PS:
If you still happen to be lucky enough to still have an analog meter (you’ll know if you do by the 5 little “clocks” on the face of it) then be sure to tag it with a notice that the meter is not to be replaced without homeowner consent. That way they don’t swap it out unbeknownst to you.
